Sports Studies BTEC Award

Course Content

This is a Level 2 course taken over two years and consists of four units in total, these being fitness for sport and exercise, practical sport, training for personal fitness and sports leadership. The course is mainly theoretical, although all aspects are taught through practical contexts wherever possible. There is, therefore, a considerable amount of written coursework. This course will suit students who enjoy putting together coursework portfolios, rather than exams. This requires students to have regular attendance and high self-motivation.

Students will be involved in practical activities in order to develop understanding and application of the theoretical content. These activities include physical fitness testing, devising training programmes, demonstrating and developing their personal skills in selected sports including volleyball, trampolining and badminton, practical sports leadership, oral presentations, written projects and practical first aid.

The Level 2 BTEC Award in Sports Studies is 75% coursework (internally assessed) and includes an online final assessment in one unit amounting to 25% (externally assessed). All units are assessed on a Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria.

Opportunities at CEC and Beyond

Students develop generic skills that allow them to build confidence and analyse performance to help create solutions. Higher education possibilities include AS/A2 Physical Education, Level 3 BTEC Sports Studies or any other sports or leisure related courses. Moving straight into employment will usually require further training but the most popular career progressions include the armed forces and work in the leisure industry.
